Income Tax Return Filing in Gujranwala

Prepared from your records. Approved by you before it goes in.

Salaried, business, or both in the same year — the return has to match what your records actually show. This page covers what filing involves, why the Wealth Statement matters more than most people realise, and what we need from you to do it properly.

Filing Is Two Documents, Not One

An online filing through Iris requires both the Return of Income and the Wealth Statement. Neither counts on its own. FBR considers the filing complete only when both forms have moved out of the Draft folder and into Completed Task.

Most of the trouble people run into later starts here — a return that was submitted, but not correctly completed.

Salaried

Built from your salary certificate, the tax already deducted at source, bank records, assets and liabilities. FBR provides Declaration Form 114(I) for someone whose salary is more than half of their total income.

Business Income

For a sole proprietor or other business case, built from the sales, purchase, expense, bank, asset and liability records you actually keep — not a template return with figures that look plausible.

Mixed Income

Salary plus business, rental or other income in the same year. Each source is recorded under its own part of the return rather than lumped together, which is where mixed-income returns most often go wrong.

The Wealth Statement Has to Reconcile

This is the requirement that catches people out, and it is not a formality.

  • The change in your wealth across the year has to match your declared income less your expenses
  • If it does not reconcile, Iris will not let the statement be submitted
  • Household and personal expenses have to be declared, not left blank
  • Assets bought in someone else’s name with your funds still belong in your statement
  • A return that reconciles badly is a common source of notices months later
  • Getting it right the first time is cheaper than answering for it afterwards

What your assets should have grown byThe figure your wealth statement has to arrive at.

That figure is then compared with the actual change between last year’s declared wealth and this year’s. If your assets grew by more than your income minus your spending can explain, the difference has to be accounted for — an inheritance, a gift, a loan, a sale. Left unexplained, it is exactly what a notice asks about.

What We Need from You

The exact list depends on your income and what you own. This is the general shape of it.

For the Return of Income

  • Salary certificate and tax deducted at source, if employed
  • Sales, purchase and expense records, if in business
  • Bank statements covering the tax year
  • Rent received, if you have property income
  • Anything disposed of during the year — property or securities
  • Dividends, profit on debt, foreign or agricultural income
  • Evidence of tax deducted or collected, and advance tax paid
  • Deductions and credits you are claiming, such as Zakat or donations

For the Wealth Statement

  • Property — agricultural, residential or commercial
  • Motor vehicles
  • Bank accounts, shares, bonds, insurance policies and other investments
  • Cash in hand, advances and amounts owed to you
  • Jewellery, household items and other valuables
  • Assets held abroad, and assets in another name bought with your funds
  • Loans, mortgages and other liabilities
  • Household and personal expenses for the year

If Something Was Filed Wrongly Before

A past return is not necessarily beyond fixing, and this is worth knowing before you assume the worst.

An income tax return can be revised within five years of being originally filed, to correct an omission or a wrong statement discovered later. The revision application goes in through Iris first and is subject to approval.

The Wealth Statement works differently — it can be revised in Iris without seeking prior approval, but only before a notice is received under sub-section (9) of section 122 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. After that notice, that route closes.

If you have had a return filed by someone else and are not sure it was done properly, the sensible order is to look at what was actually submitted before deciding anything.

Common Questions

My employer already deducts tax. Do I still need to file?

Deduction at source and filing are different things. Tax being deducted from your salary does not put you on the Active Taxpayer List — filing does. Whether you are required to file depends on your income and circumstances, and we will tell you plainly which applies to you.

Why do I have to declare my household expenses?

Because the Wealth Statement reconciles your change in wealth against income less expenses. Leave expenses out and the arithmetic will not close, and Iris will not accept the statement.

Do I have to declare my wife’s or children’s assets?

Assets acquired with your funds but held in someone else’s name belong in your statement. Assets genuinely owned and funded by another person do not. Where the line falls depends on the facts, so it is worth going through rather than guessing.

I have salary and a shop. Is that one return or two?

One return, with each source recorded under its own part. Salary, business, rent and other income are not combined into a single figure.

I have never filed. Can I start now?

Yes. Registration comes first if you are not already enrolled, then the return. Tell us your situation and we will set out the order and what it involves.

Will I see the figures before submission?

Yes. Income, deductions, assets and liabilities are reviewed with you and you confirm the main figures before anything is submitted in your name.
